Tim Shaw in ’The Pain of Others’ at Dox Centre for Contemporary Art, Prague
Tim Shaw’s major sculpture 'Casting a Dark Democracy' is included alongside an immense line up of international contemporary and historical artists including Francisco Goya, Otto Dix, Christian Boltanski, Maurizio Cattelan, Gerhard Richter and David Shrigley among others in ’The Pain of Others’ at Dox Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague.
The exhibition aims to reflect on art’s ability to speak of war, violence, and conflict, and more importantly, on our (in)ability to relate, through art, to the horrors of war and the pain of those affected by it. The project has been triggered by Russia's unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine and the unspeakable atrocities that have been committed. Its ambition is to explore our capacity to connect with other people’s pain and suffering through art. Inspired by Susan Sontag's famous essay 'Regarding the Pain of Others' (2003) which offers a profound rethinking of images of pain, horror, and atrocity - It poses an important question: how is it possible to communicate unimaginable suffering to those who have not experienced it themselves?
The Pain of Others continues from 8th December 2022 to 16th April 2023 and is curated by Leoš Válka, Otto M. Urban, Michaela Šilpochová, Tomáš Glanc and Stefano Carini.
