ENQUIRE ABOUT THIS WORK
Jean-Baptiste Besançon’s luminous paintings begin as acts of improvisation, not knowing what is to come when he starts to paint. Sometimes there is a magical happening in the first stroke, at other times the act of creating can be more fraught like a fight or more gently persuasive. Each painting's journey is then followed by a period of deep reflection. The painting lives on the linen canvas, brushed, scraped, poured, diluted, projected, transferred and smoothed, where both material and artist leave their mark. Noted for his sensory abstract painting combining subtlety and freedom, Besançon offers simultaneously delicate and emphatic works in which surface, gesture and tone, space and time, chance and consideration collide offering raw and rooted contemplation on the ephemeral and elemental nature of existence: His seductive paintings become a space of quiet questioning and meditation, offering a point of sensory origin, placement, shift and flow.
Jean-Baptiste Besançon was born in Bordeaux in 1985, where he still resides. He studied graphic design in Paris before returning to his home city to pursue his singular approach to painting. He is self-taught, despite familiarity with the medium from a young age where he began experimenting with different techniques and surfaces in his adolescence. Besançon has already held several exhibitions in the Bordeaux region, notably at the Marché de Lerme, at the Galerie Mably, at the Galerie Nova Art Sud. He also participated in the 2016 edition of Bordeaux Fête le Vin in collaboration with the Bernard Magrez Cultural Institute, for the creation of an artistic cube in the Jardin des Arts. Despite his emergence Besançon is already much heralded and in demand with exhibitions across Europe and in collections worldwide. His debut solo exhibition will feature at Anima Mundi in the summer of 2021.
